Soy bean production in the Amazon is reducing habitat for migrating birds that summer in the United States

Songbirds, Migration and Soy: What’s the Connection?

Spring season is now in full swing, with bluebells blooming and daffodils dancing. And, even sweeter, there is the sound of songbirds singing.
Now is peak migration time for many of these songbirds and they and other neotropical migrantsare finally returning north to their breeding grounds – your backyards and gardens included!  Bird lovers and wildlife gardeners can plant native trees, shrubs and wildflowers to feed and provide nesting spots for birds close to home, but what about the state of the habitat these same birds need when they fly south? Many of these birds overwinter in the Amazon.

There are 28 migratory bird species (20 land birds and 8 water birds) that regularly call the Amazon home during the winter. This group includes songbirds such as the eastern wood peweechimney swiftgray-cheeked thrusheastern kingbirdveeryblack-whiskered vireored-eyed vireoblackpoll warbler, and Connecticut warbler, as well as raptors such as the broad-winged hawkperegrine falcon and osprey.
These species depend on forested habitats for food and shelter, but forests across the globe are disappearing at an alarming rate. About 30-37 million acres of forest are lost each year, the equivalent of 36 football fields per minute!

In the Amazon, large scale agriculture is one of the main driving forces of deforestation. These agricultural goods are used to produce much of our food, clothing, and personal care products – from leather handbags and shoes to beef jerky and lip balm. This also includes soy used in animal feed in Europe and Asia, which ends up as nuggets and sausages in grocery stores and restaurants around the world.
However, there is some good news for our migratory friends and for their forested homes down south.

NWF is leading the charge to help promote forest-friendly production for the key agricultural goods that are produced in the Brazilian Amazon. Just recently, NWF experts co-authored a new study that highlighted the effectiveness of a forest-friendly initiative focused on soy, known as the Soy Moratorium. The Moratorium was the first voluntary zero-deforestation agreement in the tropics, and it prevents major traders from selling soy that is linked to deforestation in the Amazon.
This agreement has been incredibly effective at safeguarding critical wildlife habitat against deforestation for soy in the Brazilian Amazon, thus helping to ensure that our migratory friends have a place to call home during the cold winter months in the United States.
According to the study, without the Soy Moratorium, almost 5 million acres of Amazon forest could be legally cleared for soy. In other words, 5 million acres of habitat for migratory birds could be lost. So, this is a big victory for our wildlife. Additionally, this new study helps reinforce the position that NWF has supported for years: maintaining and strengthening the Soy Moratorium (and other forest-friendly initiatives) is the best strategy to reduce agriculture-related deforestation and protect our wildlife.

Ragwort discussion British government circles leads to compromise plan for control

Ragwort: Noxious weed or precious wildflower?
Ragwort - about the plant
Nineteen species of the Ragwort genus, Senecio, occur in the wild in Britain, but most of these are garden escapes or other introductions. The main 'weed' species is the native Common ragwort (Senecio jacobaea) which thrives where bare ground or thin vegetation allows the development of seedlings. The plant is often biennial, with rosettes forming in the first year that later (usually the next year) develops into a flowering shoot which can tolerate being among other tall vegetation. Common ragwort supports the most specialist insect species, however the native Hoary ragwort (Senecio erucifoliusci) which is similar in appearance, is also preferred by some insects.

The New Atlas of the Flora of Britain and Ireland (2002) shows Ragwort as native and states that ‘the distribution of Ragwort is unchanged from the map in the 1962 Atlas’. In addition, the Countryside Survey (a national scientific study) found no specific evidence of an increase in Ragwort in grasslands (i.e. grazing land) during the period 1990 to 1998. Although they showed an increase in lowland woods and on arable land, neither of these habitats are frequently grazed by horses. The perceived increase in Ragwort abundance seems to be simply a result of increasing awareness.

There are also other widespread Ragworts with similar sized flowers which look similar to common ragwort. Marsh ragwort (Senecio aquaticus), occurs locally in wet, unimproved fields. The growth form is shorter and the flowering shoots are more splayed than Common ragwort. Current information suggests that this supports fewer species of special insects but remains important for pollinating insects. Oxford ragwort (Senecio squalidus) is an introduced plant, with a loosely bushy growth form, which has become very widespread as a weed along railway lines and on rubbish dumps. A few insects feed upon it, but it is more important as a nectaring source for insects. Additionally there are some rare native Senecio notably the Fen ragwort (Senecio paludosus), which grows to 2m in height, and the Welsh groundsel (Senecio cambrensis), a species of waste ground and waysides.
Most of the other widespread native species of Senecio are groundsels. These often have inconspicuous flowers with poorly developed petals, whereas Ragworts have larger bright yellow petals. Groundsels support a relatively poor fauna however the Sticky groundsel (Senecio viscosus) is used by a few specialist species and is mildly attractive to pollinating insects.
It is important to realise that there are numerous other plants with a roughly similar growth-form and yellow flowers. Even on the ground, with limited botanical knowledge it is possible to be confused as to whether plants are Ragworts or not, let alone which Ragwort species. Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare), St. John's Wort (Hypericum spp.) and Hawkweeds (Hieracium spp.) are among the plants commonly mistaken for Ragwort.
Ragwort and horses
In some circumstances Ragwort needs to be controlled but the level of control needs to be proportionate to the risk. The purpose here is to look at the facts, especially in relation to the high profile concern over toxicity to horses.
The toxins (pyrrolizidine alkaloids) in Ragwort (sometimes known as Stagger Weed) can cause liver poisoning. It is a cumulative poison that eventually leads to the rapid onset of symptoms before death, however the symptoms are variable and resemble those of a number of other diseases. Furthermore the diagnosis can only be confirmed by dissection of the liver. The lethal volume of Ragwort is around 7% of body weight for horses and cattle are also prone. Sheep are thought to be less prone to poisoning although it is difficult to find solid evidence of any fatal effects on livestock other than horses.
In 1990, MAFF (the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) published figures showing that only 10 horses died that year from Ragwort poisoning however in 2002 the British Horse Society (BHS) and the British Equestrian Veterinary Association (BEVA) reported figures of 6500 per year! Although these figures have now been removed from their websites, they are sometimes still quoted as evidence for an increase in numbers of poisonings. At the time the Wildlife and Countryside Link (a consortium of most of the main voluntary conservation and countryside organisations) countered that the statistical basis of this analysis was inaccurate as only 4% of BEVA members responded saying on average they had seen 3.37 suspected cases. This was then multiplied by the membership of BEVA (1,945) to give a total of 6,553 cases. It is highly unlikely that this is anywhere near the true figure because;
  1. The data is not based on confirmed cases, but on the suspicions of vets.
  2. Vets who did not encounter any Ragwort poisoning would be less likely to respond to a survey about
    Ragwort poisoning, so extrapolation of results is not possible.
A more realistic reporting of the survey results would be that up to 283 horses were suspected of dying of Ragwort poisoning in 2002. Clearly any Ragwort poisoning is a tragedy to both horse and owner and there is no doubt that poisoning incidents do genuinely occur in Britain, but the figure of 6500 is improbably high.
Horses are susceptible to Ragwort poisoning via two main routes;
  1. Grazing in fields containing Ragwort. Ragwort is not a preferred food plant for horses however, problems arise where paddocks and fields are over-grazed and animals have no choice but to eat toxic plants. Moreover, over-grazing opens up the turf to reveal bare ground which is ideal for Ragwort seed germination. To this extent, horse owners can generate the very problem that they wish to avoid.
  2. The presence of Ragwort in stored food such as silage or hay. The plant is still toxic when dead, but horses are less able to detect and avoid it. For this reason, hay from fields with Ragwort should not be fed to stock or horses.
The most appropriate solutions to the problem of Ragwort poisoning are therefore;
  1. The proper implementation of Agriculture Act 1970 and Feeding Stuffs Regulations 2000, in which regulation 14 makes it an offence to sell feeding stuff contaminated with dangerous material.
  2. The promotion of improved management of horse pastures, using established techniques (e.g. stock rotation and reduced grazing pressure) to minimise Ragwort content.
A further worry is seed dispersal from land adjacent to horse fields or those used for hay. Though the seed is wind dispersed, a study showed that only 0.5% became airborne and that only a tiny fraction reached 40m from the parent plant (cited in Harper & Wood, 1957). Whilst it is possible that seed could travel more than 40m, there is no need for extra wide buffer zones.
Ragwort control and the Law
The Ragwort Control Bill Act started as a Private Members Bill and has a curious history whereby Defra omitted to consult the conservation NGOs during the initial stages of the Bill. The Wildlife & Countryside Link (of which Buglife is a member) raised a number of objections;
a) That Ragwort and its fauna is part of Britain's wildlife and ought to be viewed positively.
b) The claim that Ragwort was becoming more abundant could not be substantiated and data from the Countryside Survey suggested otherwise.
c) The solution is improved horse husbandry, including avoidance of over-grazing and ensuring the production of ragwort free hay crops.
d) The data for numbers of horse deaths attributed to Ragwort poisoning was not statistically valid.
e) Efforts to control Ragwort by those lacking sufficient botanical knowledge could affect other Ragwort

species or unrelated plants with a similar appearance.
In the House of Lords debate on 17 October 2003 Lord Brooke of Sutton Mandeville stated that; "A recent review by Buglife-the Invertebrate Conservation Trust identified 30 invertebrates as being confined to Ragwort. Three beetles and four flies were nationally scarce, and one of the flies may deserve red data book status. Lest all that seem de minimis, certain groups of such insects particularly associated with ancient trees use Ragwort as a nectar source, especially when the mid-season sources of nectar are scarce."
The Ragwort Control Bill is now implemented through a Code of Practice that provides guidance on how to prevent the spread of Ragwort;

The Code states that 'common ragwort and other ragwort species are native to the British Isles and are therefore an inherent part of our flora and fauna, along with invertebrate and other wildlife they support. The Code does not propose the eradication of common ragwort but promotes a strategic approach to control the spread of common ragwort where it poses a threat to the health and welfare of grazing animals and the production of feed or forage.'
An excessive carpet of Ragwort, especially of Common ragwort, is not desired by either conservationists or farmers and the principle of applying control where ragwort has become dominant is well established. What is sought is a tolerance of reasonable quantities of Ragwort in locations where it is doing no real harm e.g.:

1) On urban and rural uncultivated land.
2) On road verges, bye-ways, even bridle-ways. In most circumstances horses are not going to stop to eat distasteful plants.
3) In pastures which are not destined to reach the over-stocking level which may drive animals to eat even plants which are unpalatable.
4) On land that has important Biodiversity associated with the Ragwort plants.


What is 'a reasonable quantity' of Ragwort?
The answer to this question depends on local circumstances and the richness of the fauna. An annual appearance of 25 - 50 decent sized flowering plants may be a fair minimum for bees, though more than 100 plants would be more viable for a self contained overall fauna within a few hundred yards or 'a site'. The best faunal districts are likely to contain many more plants, often as clusters of smaller stands of Ragwort (supporting metapopulations of insects).
Just as an understanding of the concerns of horse owners is needed, so too is an understanding of the biodiversity at stake. The objective is to ensure that there is a place for both horses and the special wildlife dependant on Ragwort.
Biocontrol
The main insects that can devastate populations of Ragwort are the Cinnabar moth and the flea beetle, Longitarsus jacobaeae. Some of the fly larvae and moth caterpillars have the capacity to decrease seed production. The remaining fauna collectively impact upon the health and vigour of Ragwort, though the significance will depend on local circumstances. On the whole, districts where Ragwort is always present should have the most complete insect fauna and are thus best placed to continuously affect control. It is usually where poor land management allows excessive colonisation by Ragwort seed that the man made problems arise.

Biocontrol of Ragwort using British species has been attempted where the plant has become an introduced pest in such countries as North America and New Zealand. In Britain natural biocontrol can operate, but usually there is a cycle whereby strong suppression of Ragwort resulting in a collapse in the insect populations, allowing Ragwort to recover. It is also the case that the presence of a range of parasites of these insects in the UK also limits the populations of the Ragwort feeders. It should be noted that cinnabar moth larvae can strip plants completely but the roots usually managed to shoot again the next year whereas the flea beetle actually kills plants before they can flower.

These links should be forwarded to everyone you know  that drinks water in Little Rock.  

This "political compromise"  by the Central Arkansas Water Commission is clearly one of the most stupid decisions possible in regard to water protection.    If enough people call, write, and/or show up at the final decision making meeting(s), your right to clean water might have a better chance.  The problem in not taking this personally and not acting on this issue is that no one knows what is "enough," when it comes to influencing the outcome of a vote by a governmental body, therefore everyone needs to voice  their opinions.   OR just show up and clap or give a hurrah when someone speaks for the watershed's protection.  Don't take this "political compromise" of your health lying down.

Below are a couple of links to a great site about New York City's watershed.  It is protected by forests, not eroding sediment into the water supply from subdivisions and roads, and it serves millions of people with relatively clean water. The water is tested constantly, and their watershed is understood as a filter and purifier, the total opposite of what the lame brains in central Ark are doing. 

"The success of the program is one of the main reasons why New York City remains one of only five large cities in the United States that is not required to filter its drinking water."

Should you want anything less for your body, your city, and your state than what New York provides its citizens?
Get out there and fight these folks, for heavens' sake!

Joe Mosby inducted into Hall of Fame

Outdoor writer Joe Mosby receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Travel around our part of Central Arkansas, and you might see piles of brush, the remnants of old trees, limbs and other woody debris perhaps left from windstorms.
Farmers who leave such brush piles in their fields likely aren’t lazy but smart. They also might be good sportsmen, interested in keeping habitats for the wildlife on their farms.
So says Joe Mosby, Arkansas’s best-known outdoor writer, who was honored Saturday night at the Arkansas Sportscasters and Sports Writers Hall of Fame banquet with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mosby, 80, is the retired news editor of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission who continues to write a weekly column and several stories on the outdoors distributed by the Arkansas News Bureau and published in several state newspapers, including the Log Cabin Democrat.
Mosby has been encouraging people — not just hunters and fishermen — to get outdoors, “under nature’s canopy,” for decades.
He was inducted into the Arkansas Outdoor Hall of Fame in 2002.
He’s the best friend of the sportsman, knowing — and telling — where the fish are biting, when deer seasons open, why the ducks aren’t — or are — as plentiful as before.
Through his writings, he shares experiences as if you were right there with him, sitting around the campfire, cleaning a mess of fish for the next morning’s breakfast.
And he writes about the treasures of Arkansas with the passion of a man who has heard the elks bugling in Boxley Valley, felt the tug of a trout on his line in the White River and made memories on Petit Jean Mountain.
As sure as the rabbits live in the brush pile, he seems to say, this Arkansas is our habitat. Get outdoors. Watch, listen, touch, enjoy.
Others receiving recognition at the Arkansas Sports Club banquet were:
• Former University of Arkansas Athletic Director Frank Broyles, who served several years as an ABC analyst for college football, Sportscaster of the Year.
• Former Arkansas Gazette reporter Wadie Moore, Sportswriter of the Year.
• The family of the late Arch Jones received a service award.
• Don Nixon was honored as Member of the Year for the Arkansas Sports Club.

The real horror of this Halloween
Conservation lessons still unlearned


The privilege of writing a column to be published on one's birthday is no small gift. Having that privilege on one's 57th birthday is even more special. Birthdays are a time for reflection – a time to consider the heritage our generation will pass on to the next.

It may seem eerily appropriate that a Halloween birthday column must sometimes be frightening or at best depressing. Nearly a decade ago, my Halloween column was a brief eulogy for one of my favorite outdoorsmen – Dr. Charles C. Chadbourn Jr., a college English professor at Louisiana Tech University and later a resident of Fayetteville, Arkansas, who encouraged me to follow in his professional footsteps and helped me develop the tools to teach and to write. And, despite my continuing love and gratitude for life, this column may be equally sad to compose. When I started writing about the outdoors for Arkansas newspapers some 25 years ago, I believed that outdoor writers had one major responsibility – to help protect the natural resources on which the outdoor sports depend. The horrible thing is that threats to those resources continue after all these years. Whether labeled conservationists or environmentalists, outdoor writers almost universally agree that trying to prevent degradation of water, woods and every type of wildlife habitat is the basic redeeming value of their work. Certainly, we report on and even promote fishing, bird watching, hunting, game-calling, hiking, camping, photography, spelunking, swimming, rafting, canoeing, repelling, pigeon racing, arrow-head, rock, leaf and driftwood collecting, wild-flower identification, horsemanship, rowing, power boating and sailing – as well as dog training for obedience trials, hunting tests and conformation shows – in order to share our pleasure in these and numerous other outdoor activities. We write about recreational sports such as running, bicycling and race-walking whether they involve competition or pure exercise.

But, without the outdoor enthusiast's vested interest in high-quality habitat, the writer might be nothing more than an entertainer. Such motivation is the key to writing about outdoor activities with accuracy and enthusiasm. Healthy habitat for human beings and other living creatures is a necessity for these activities to remain possible. That's why we even promote modern methods of farming, manufacturing and building in order to discourage practices that destroy habitat. Fish and wildlife depend on more than drinkable water and unpopulated space.

A cement-lined ditch seldom harbors fish. Open space devoid of mature, diverse vegetation seldom holds wildlife.

Streams that people are anxious to swim in are likely to provide habitat for healthy fish that people can eat safely. Mature forests that provide shade for human activity and are aesthetically pleasing also are likely to foster numerous birds and animals. Unfortunately, relatively few people without some interest in outdoor recreation are likely to understand the full importance of natural habitat.

A person who has caught fish or killed game animals for food is likely to develop a sense of awareness of the value of healthy habitat. Until very recently, practically everyone knew we depend on the rest of creation. Our ancestors caught, killed, trapped or gathered much of their food even after beginning to cultivate crops and domesticate sheep, chickens, cattle and such.

Because beautiful woods and waterways are usually healthy and productive, the conservation movement of 100 or more years ago, which preceded and did the groundwork for the environmental movement of the past 40 years, was started by outdoor-sports enthusiasts.

Many people feel compelled to fight to keep groundwater pure because they want drinkable water in their wells or because they want to protect the fish and wildlife that depend on that water. But people who think damming streams to create reservoirs and treating the water with chemicals and pumping it hither and yon is as good as being able to drink from springs and wells simply aren't going to fight the creation of landfills or insist on recycling and composting as ardently as those who value the opportunity to live naturally and who believe that all species have the right to exist.

Now, I love a baseball field about as much as a person can love anything made by mankind. I'm even sympathetic to those who like football fields, soccer fields, golf courses, tennis courts and rugby fields. But unnecessarily clearing ground is a sin to me. An area of mowed grass is almost a wasteland for wildlife. It's better than graveled surfaces, which are better than paved surfaces. But fleas, moles and such are about the only species that can relate well to frequently mowed grassland.

A hay meadow, mowed maybe twice a year, can still provide safe nesting for birds and rabbits whose timing is good, of course. But a field of native grass with diverse wildflowers is as valuable to many species as are the hardwood forests that provide the most productive wildlife habitat on the continent. That's why a major tenet of the conservation movement always has been that no vegetation should be removed if it can be left alone.

Of particular importance to both fish and wildlife is the vegetation along the edge of streams, natural lakes, ponds and reservoirs. Many species of fish spawn successfully only in years when water levels are high enough to overflow and cover a certain amount of shoreline vegetation.

Twenty years ago, fishermen were begging the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Southwest Power Authority to keep water levels high through the spring on all the reservoirs in the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains of Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas to flood the shoreline vegetation and improve fish populations.

Simultaneously, stream-fishing enthusiasts and canoeists were begging state and federal authorities to protect a wide band of mature timber along every river and creek in the area. Duck hunters and others who appreciate waterfowl were working to get those who manage both private and public land along lowland streams to understand the value of keeping wetland habitat pristine.

Such efforts continue. Even many city-dwellers, now the majority in the Ozarks, have begun to realize that turning tree-lined streams into ditches is just as wrong in cities as in rural areas. Urban-wildlife sanctuaries are replacing carefully landscaped backyards in many neighborhoods.

A person who understands the interdependence of all species doesn't have to hunt or fish to know that habitat must be kept as natural as possible if life is to survive. The destruction of rain forests and jungles in Africa, Asia and South America is blamed for climatic changes that could affect all of us.

But the horror of habitat destruction hits us much harder when a neighbor removes a tree that has provided a shady nook on our side of the fence and may even have saved us a few hundred dollars a summer by reducing the need to air-condition our home. Or maybe driving to work one day becomes less pleasant and relaxing because trees have been cleared from a hillside or a pasture or meadow has been leveled and paved to make space for one more parking lot for another unnecessary commercial establishment, subdivision or apartment complex.

If everyone could grow up hunting, fishing and working a garden, maybe there would be no one willing to destroy the best our area offers – the things that were here when the first settlers arrived. So, when outdoor writers struggle to find words to share the true joy of favorite activities, forgive them if they drift into a conservationist's sermon.

Sometimes, the process of educating the public to appreciate what we were given as inhabitants of this earth seems too slow. We just feel compelled to urge people to stop destroying and start preserving things without which we never could have gotten where we are.
